On July 10, 2026, Ugandan police arrested over 700 foreign nationals in Garuga, Katabi Town Council, Wakiso District, for suspected involvement in cyber-enabled fraud and other digital crimes. The majority of those arrested were Chinese nationals, according to police spokesperson Fred Enanga.

The operation, conducted by the Uganda Police Force's Cyber Crime Unit, targeted a large compound used as a call center. Authorities seized computers, mobile phones, and other electronic equipment. Enanga stated that the suspects are believed to have defrauded victims across multiple countries, including the United States and Europe.

The suspects are being held at various police stations in Kampala and Wakiso. They face charges of cyber fraud, money laundering, and illegal entry into Uganda. The Chinese embassy in Kampala has been notified and is providing consular assistance.

This is one of the largest cybercrime busts in East Africa. Investigations are ongoing to identify all victims and trace the proceeds of crime.
