According to the latest Legatum Prosperity Index, released in late 2025 and covering data through 2026, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Botswana lead Africa in prosperity. The index evaluates 167 countries based on inclusive societies, open economies, and empowered citizens.
Mauritius ranks highest in Africa (46th globally), followed by Seychelles (52nd) and Botswana (75th). Other top African performers include South Africa (80th), Cape Verde (85th), and Namibia (90th). These countries score well in governance, personal freedom, and social capital.
The index highlights that African nations have made mixed progress. While some, like Rwanda and Ghana, improved in education and health, others face challenges in security and infrastructure. The Legatum Institute notes that prosperity is not solely about wealth but also about quality of life and opportunity.
