Researchers are testing vaccines designed to prevent colon cancer by targeting precancerous polyps before they become malignant. These vaccines aim to stimulate the immune system to recognize and eliminate abnormal cells that could develop into tumors.
According to recent reports, several vaccine candidates are in early-stage clinical trials. One approach focuses on neoantigens—mutated proteins on polyps—to trigger an immune response. Another uses a personalized vaccine based on a patient's specific polyp mutations.
The concept is similar to HPV vaccines, which prevent cervical cancer by targeting the virus that causes it. However, colon cancer vaccines are more complex because they must target mutations that vary between individuals.
Experts emphasize that these vaccines are not yet available to the public and require years of testing to prove safety and efficacy. If successful, they could complement existing screening methods like colonoscopy.
