Ghana has reaffirmed its support for Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara region, according to a joint statement issued on Tuesday in Accra following talks between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Ghanaian counterpart, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The statement, released on July 21, 2026, highlighted Accra's backing for Morocco's territorial integrity and the autonomy plan proposed by Rabat as a solution to the long-standing dispute. Ghana also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council resolutions that recognize Morocco's efforts in the region.
This diplomatic move aligns with a growing trend of African nations supporting Morocco's position on the Sahara, as the kingdom continues to seek international recognition for its claims. The talks in Accra also covered bilateral cooperation in trade, security, and regional stability.
