Algeria's National Road Safety Agency (ANSR) announced that vehicles traveling abroad will soon need license plates featuring Latin letters, in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. The convention sets international standards for vehicle registration plates to facilitate cross-border travel.
The new plates will include the Latin letters 'DZ' (for Algeria) alongside the existing Arabic numerals and letters. This change aims to ensure Algerian vehicles are recognized and compliant when driving in other countries that are signatories to the convention.
The ANSR stated that the introduction will be phased, with details on the implementation timeline and affected vehicles to be communicated later. The move is part of broader efforts to modernize vehicle registration and align with international norms.
Currently, Algerian plates use Arabic script and numerals, which can pose challenges for foreign authorities. The addition of Latin characters is expected to ease identification and enforcement abroad.
