Environment Canada has issued heat warnings for much of Ontario as a heat dome settles over the region, bringing dangerously high temperatures and humidity. The humidex, which combines temperature and humidity, is expected to reach up to 45°C in parts of the province, including the Greater Toronto Area.
The heat dome, a high-pressure system that traps warm air, is forecast to persist through the week, with daytime highs near 35°C and overnight lows offering little relief, staying above 20°C. Officials urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat, and check on vulnerable individuals.
Cooling centers have been opened in several cities, including Toronto, Ottawa, and Hamilton. The extreme heat poses health risks, particularly for seniors, children, and those with pre-existing conditions. Environment Canada advises monitoring for symptoms of heat stroke, such as dizziness, nausea, and confusion.
