As of July 16, 2026, Ontario's wildfire situation remains critical, with over 100 active fires burning across the province, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. More than half of these fires are classified as out of control, and several communities in northwestern Ontario are under evacuation orders.
Among the hardest-hit areas is the region around Red Lake, where the 49-26 fire has forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents. The Ontario government has deployed additional waterbombers and firefighting crews to the area, and the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre has coordinated support from other provinces.
Air quality advisories remain in effect for much of northern Ontario due to heavy smoke, with Environment Canada warning of high health risks for vulnerable populations. The fires have also disrupted transportation, with sections of Highway 17 and Highway 101 closed intermittently.
Officials urge residents in affected areas to follow evacuation orders and prepare emergency kits. The cause of the fires is under investigation, but dry conditions and lightning strikes are believed to be contributing factors.
