The Polisario Front has formally called on the United Nations Security Council to address the issue of Sahrawi political prisoners held in Moroccan prisons, according to a statement released on July 22, 2026. The organization alleges that dozens of Sahrawi activists are being detained without fair trial, in violation of international law.
The appeal comes ahead of the Security Council's annual debate on Western Sahara, scheduled for October 2026. The Polisario Front demands the release of all prisoners of conscience and urges the UN to monitor their conditions.
Morocco, which controls most of the disputed Western Sahara territory, has not commented on the specific allegations. The UN has previously called for dialogue between the parties to resolve the long-standing conflict.
