KANSAS CITY, Missouri, July 11 (Reuters) – Switzerland coach Murat Yakin described the rule behind Breel Embolo's sending off as “unacceptable” after Argentina scored twice in extra time to end the Swiss fairytale World Cup run with a 3-1 quarter-final victory on Saturday.
Embolo was shown a second yellow card in the 105th minute for a challenge on Argentina's Rodrigo De Paul, reducing Switzerland to 10 men. Argentina then capitalized with goals from Lionel Messi and Julián Álvarez in extra time to secure the win.
“The rule that led to the red card is unacceptable,” Yakin said in a post-match press conference. “It changes the game completely. We were competitive until that moment.”
The match had been tied 1-1 after regulation time, with Switzerland's Manuel Akanji scoring in the 88th minute to cancel out an earlier goal from Argentina's Ángel Di María. The Swiss team had been hoping to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 1954.
Argentina will now face Brazil in the semi-finals on Tuesday.
