A 12-year-old girl died from her wounds on Saturday, a day after a 14-year-old student opened fire at a high school and his home on the outskirts of Bangkok, raising the death toll to at least eight people, according to police and hospital officials.
The shooting occurred on Friday morning when the suspect, a student at the school, fired a handgun at classmates and teachers before fleeing to his home, where he continued shooting. The attacker was later arrested by police.
Among the dead are six students and two adults, including the suspect's mother, who was killed at the family home. The 14-year-old shooter was also found dead at his home, though police have not yet confirmed whether he died from a self-inflicted wound or was killed by officers.
Authorities have not released a motive for the attack, but local media reported that the suspect had a history of disciplinary issues. The incident has reignited debates about gun control in Thailand, where civilian gun ownership is relatively high for the region.
Thailand has experienced several mass shootings in recent years, including a 2020 attack on a mall in Nakhon Ratchasima that killed 29 people, and a 2022 daycare center attack that killed 36, mostly children.
