President Donald Trump has directed the U.S. Navy to abandon the electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) on future aircraft carriers and revert to the older steam catapult technology, according to an Associated Press report published on August 14, 2026.
The order, confirmed by defense officials, applies to the Gerald R. Ford-class carriers. Trump has previously criticized EMALS as too complex and costly, stating that the United States should use a system that is proven and reliable.
The Navy had already invested heavily in EMALS, which uses linear induction motors to launch aircraft. However, the system has faced technical challenges and cost overruns. The switch back to steam catapults is expected to affect the design of carriers not yet built, including the USS Enterprise (CVN-80) and USS Doris Miller (CVN-81).
Pentagon officials said they are reviewing the directive and will assess the feasibility and cost implications. No timeline has been announced for the transition.
