The Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline, also known as the African-Atlantic Gas Pipeline, is a major infrastructure project designed to transport natural gas from Nigeria to Morocco and onward to Europe. According to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the pipeline will span approximately 5,600 kilometers, crossing 13 West African countries. As of July 2026, the project is in the advanced planning and feasibility stage, with memoranda of understanding signed between Nigeria, Morocco, and several transit nations.
The pipeline aims to monetize Nigeria's vast natural gas reserves, which are among the largest in Africa, while providing a reliable energy source to countries like Benin, Togo, Ghana, and CΓ΄te d'Ivoire. The project is expected to reduce gas flaring in Nigeria and support the region's transition to cleaner energy. The European Union has expressed interest in the pipeline as a way to diversify its gas imports, particularly after the 2022 energy crisis.
Key challenges include financing, estimated at over $25 billion, and security concerns in the Sahel region. However, the African Development Bank and other international lenders have shown support. The pipeline is projected to be operational by 2030, pending final investment decisions. This initiative could transform West Africa's energy landscape, fostering economic integration and reducing energy poverty.
