FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that the organization is studying the possibility of expanding the 2030 FIFA World Cup to 64 teams, up from the 48-team format already planned for the 2026 edition. The 2030 tournament will be co-hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal.
Infantino made the remarks during a press conference, stating that the proposal would be discussed further. No final decision has been made, and any expansion would require approval from the FIFA Council.
The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will be the first to feature 48 teams. The 2030 edition marks the centenary of the tournament, with the first match played in Uruguay.
