Tenants at Gillman Barracks, Singapore's arts and lifestyle enclave, have long known that redevelopment was on the cards once the lease expires in 2030. Confirmation on Friday (Jul 10) that the site will make way for housing followed environmental studies and public consultations.
According to a Straits Times report on Jul 11, 2026, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) announced that the 6.4-hectare site will be redeveloped into a mixed-use residential precinct, with some arts spaces possibly retained. Tenants expressed hope to keep the precinct alive until the end, with some planning pop-up events and collaborations.
Gillman Barracks, which opened in 2012, houses over 10 galleries and art spaces. The lease expiry has been a known deadline, but tenants say they are 'on borrowed time' and aim to maintain vibrancy. The redevelopment is part of Singapore's long-term land use plan.
