Conor McGregor's highly anticipated return to the UFC ended abruptly Saturday night at UFC 329 in Las Vegas, as the fight against Max Holloway was stopped at 1:09 of the first round due to a knee injury. McGregor, 37, was competing for the first time in over five years.
According to the UFC broadcast, McGregor appeared to injure his left knee while throwing a kick early in the round. He immediately fell to the canvas and was unable to continue, prompting referee Herb Dean to wave off the bout. Holloway was declared the winner by TKO.
McGregor's last fight before this was a loss to Dustin Poirier in July 2021, where he also suffered a leg injury. The Irish fighter had been scheduled to return multiple times since then, but various setbacks delayed his comeback.
UFC president Dana White confirmed after the event that McGregor will undergo further medical evaluation. The severity of the injury and a timeline for recovery have not yet been announced.
