Warrant Officer Vincent Mkhize, a member of the SAPS Umlazi Visible Policing unit, was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for the murder of his son, but the sentence was wholly suspended for five years by the Chatsworth Magistrate's Court.
The incident occurred when Mkhize mistook his son for an intruder and fatally shot him. The court considered the circumstances and imposed the suspended sentence.
Mkhize was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. The case highlights the tragic consequences of mistaken identity in home security situations.
